Navigating a media career: work, life and women
Young women make up 70 to 80 per cent of the student cohort in journalism programs, yet they still fill a minority of leadership positions in media organisations and they earn less than their male peers. Yet many young women will not really become aware of these inequalities until they take a career break to have children or care for parents. The need to reduce work hours or juggle work with the needs of dependents can impact career progression and pay rates.
This effects young men too: fathers are not generally entitled to as much parental leave as mothers and many will have partners who want careers and a family, so they will need to take on some of the caring responsibilities. To help aspiring media workers navigate the challenges ahead, the School of Communication and Arts, in conjunction with UQ’s New2UQ program, have pulled together an industry panel to discuss this topic. It includes:
- Genevieve Hussey: Head of ABC News Queensland;
- Christine Jackman: Former News Ltd journalist, author of Kevin 07, and communications director at Crosby Textor;
- Michelle Rae: QLD director of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance.
- Donna Thistlewaite: Founder of Career Smart Mums
