Welcome to the School of Communication and Arts
We are a School that unites multiple disciplines of communication, journalism, writing, literature, art history, drama, film, television and digital media.
The core of our vision is the belief in the power of words, images and performance to shape the world, inspire change and tell the stories that matter. The heart of our work is to study the ways in which we understand, express and connect with the world.
Combining academic scholarship with creative practice and industry relevance, we offer a collegial and supportive environment with a strong focus on equipping our students with deep knowledge, skills and leadership to thrive in the ever-changing world of communication, media and the creative arts. We educate graduates as skilled communicators, critical thinkers and creative visionaries.
Further, the School is home to three research centres — the Centre for Critical and Creative Writing; the Centre for Communication and Social Change; and the Centre for Digital Futures — as well as the newly-opened Avalon Theatre. We are also the proud partner of AustLit, an important research tool for all aspects of Australian literature, writing and storytelling.
Together, our transformative scholarship combines cutting-edge research with creative practice and award-winning teaching to fulfil the University of Queensland’s mission of delivering for the public good through excellence in education, research and community engagement.
In an era of rapid digital transformation, evolving media landscapes and global cultural exchange, we need to tell and understand our stories more than ever. At the School, we seek to amplify the voices of storytellers and the community to increase understanding of each other's lived experiences and build a better world.
I invite you to browse our website and learn more about what we do. Whether as a student, teacher, researcher, donor or any other community member, I hope we will find ways to journey together.
