Deborah Thomas has a PhD from the University of Queensland in Screen, Communication, and Cultural Studies. Her thesis offered the first in-depth examination of smart film, a term used to describe a wave of contemporary American films attached to the trope of irony. Deborah’s research encompasses areas such as ‘smart’ and cult cinema, cinematic affect, irony and ethics, character and performance studies, Australian genre cinema and ‘Ozploitation’, history of public service broadcasting, BBC Worldwide, media marketing and branding, and true crime, podcasts and transformations in investigative journalism.
