The Pacific and Other Oceans

Internationally, many disciplines have turned their attention to oceans – especially but not only the Atlantic – as they have realized they are not merely blank or empty spaces between land but are contested, complex and historied places. However, although Australia is clearly surrounded by water, most students and scholars tend to be familiar with continental rather than Oceanic scholarly conversations, despite the strong roots of Pacific Studies in Australia.

This seminar will trace the central claims and potential contributions of Oceanic studies and Pacific studies. After an overview of the specific and unique elements of Pacific studies we will discuss how these fields converge and what this might all mean for research – including literary and cultural research - in Australia.

All Welcome.
