Enacting a Sense of Home Among Older Chinese Migrants in Australia

Presented by A/Prof Shuang Liu

Date: Friday 4 October, 2019
Time: 3:00pm-4:00pm
Location: Digital Learning Space (Room 224, Level 2), Joyce Ackroyd Building (#37)

Abstract:

This presentation advances an understanding of the significance of home to older migrants and explores the process through which they build a sense of home, drawing on empirical data from older Chinese in Australia. The findings indicate that an immigrant’s home is not only a place of residence and a set of relationships with family members, but also a site where ethnic and mainstream cultures are traversed and identities negotiated. An understanding of the home building process can inform researchers, practitioners, communities, and policy-makers in terms of designing strategies to facilitate ageing well in a foreign land.

Presenter:

A/Prof Shuang Liu researches and publishes in the areas of ageing and immigration, acculturation, identity negotiation, and intercultural relations. She is particularly interested in how older people of diverse cultural backgrounds search for a sense of home, identity, and belonging as they live and age in a foreign land..
