AustLit is thrilled to host two Creative Writing Fellowships in 2026.
These Fellowships, each worth $15,000, are an exceptional opportunity for two early-career Australian writers, one of which is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander writer, to develop and write a new and original creative work in your nominated field of expertise. These fellowships are for writers to use AustLit data as inspiration for your novel, play, collection of short stories, non-fiction essays, book of poems, or novella.
AustLit is an online bibliographical and biographical database of Australian literature housed in the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland. A critical piece of Australia’s digital heritage and research infrastructure, containing over 1,000,000 work records by and about Australian literary culture, and it aims to be “the definitive bibliography and research environment for Australian literature and storytelling” (AustLit).
These Writing Fellowships are offered to two writers, including an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander writer, who have transitioned from the emerging phase of their career to early or mid-career career stage. We are looking for writers with a few significant publications under their belts. The opportunity is targeted to those making the leap towards an ongoing writing career. We recognise this step towards a sustainable professional career is often the most challenging and we are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for a research-based project to early-career writers.
