About the School
Welcome to the School of Communication and Arts, and to our wealth of expertise and creativity across all facets of communication, journalism, writing, literature, art history and the arts at The University of Queensland. Despite the diversity of our disciplinary mix, the two parts of our name points to a unity: the acknowledgement that creative expression has to communicate and that every act of communication is expressive in some way.The School offers a collegial and supportive environment for study with a strong focus on equipping our students with deep knowledge, skills and leadership that will enrich and enable fulfilling lives.
If you study with us, you can rest assured that you will have access to all the technologies and activities that enhance learning and develop applied skills. This high-quality professional learning environment will remain central to program delivery in this area. No changes to our programs or courses are expected as a result of the new school.
For coursework postgraduate and research higher degree students, we will be looking to realise new synergies among our programs that help your journey and results.
UQ is already a leader in Communication and Media Studies, with our research ranked 25th in the world in QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2016.
Cultural Studies, and Communication and Media Studies research also rated at the highest level – well above world standard – in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia results, while Film, Television and Digital Media research rated above world standard.
We anticipate that there will be advantages to industry partners in terms of easier access to communication expertise across a wider range of areas, including journalism, professional writing, public relations, creative writing, and media studies. Please get in touch if you think there is a way our research can bring impact to your business or industry, or if you would like to support students by adding to our already large list of work-integrated learning opportunities.
In short, our school gives us the scale and focus to drive stronger outcomes in teaching and research and make us a force to be reckoned with in our disciplines internationally.
I encourage you to browse our website and learn more about what we do; and we look forward to continuing our many relationships and developing new ones in 2016.
