29 August 2025

Tania ChatterjeeTania Chatterjee, a joint PhD candidate with The University of Queensland and the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, was recently invited to join Kelly Higgins-Devine on ABC Radio Brisbane.

Her research focuses on social media regulation in India, particularly how platforms navigate the complex process of content moderation. In the radio chat [begins 2hr:26min], Tania shared findings from her recently published work on how content moderators make decisions in this demanding environment.

She shed light on the working conditions of moderators in India, who are tasked with reviewing large volumes of online content and making nuanced judgements that cannot be left to automation. Tania noted how job insecurity and high workloads often compromise the ability to apply thorough judgement, highlighting the need to reassess current systems. She also reflected on the potential role of artificial intelligence in content moderation, considering both its possibilities and its limitations.

Tania’s research adds to ongoing discussions on digital governance, labour, and the future online trust and safety and speech
