Archives: A Knowledge Café on Ways of Knowing, Seeing, Being, and Accessing

A conversation hosted by Kate Newey, Bernadette Cochrane, Madelyn Coupe, and Hannah Mason

Date: Friday 16 August 2024
Time: 12:00-1:00pm
Location: Online via Zoom and in-person at the SCA Writer's Studio (Level 6, Michie Building)

Abstract

The session speculates on the evolving nature of archives. We explore traditional archives, digital archives, amateur archivists, disability access, and the body as an archive. Traditional archives anchor historical knowledge, while digital archives suggest new democratized pathways. Amateur archivists might transform the archival landscape with personal narratives or allow individuals to coalesce around a particular entity. Ensuring disability access could reshape inclusivity in archiving, including visibility within the archive. The body as an archive proposes memory and experience embodied through physical presence. Four position papers will probe these themes, inviting participants to reimagine how we document and engage with our collective histories and identities. Observers are invited to contribute to the conversation following the presentation of position papers, enriching the dialogue with their unique perspectives and experiences. This session aims to foster a collective knowledge exchange, where participants can learn from each other, share ideas and insights.
