Capturing Knowledge in Creative Research

Presented by Dr Skye Doherty

Date: Friday 18 May, 2018
Time: 3pm-4pm
Location: Digital Learning Space (Room 224, Level 2), Joyce Ackroyd Building (#37)

Abstract:

In practice-led research, the situated nature of generative knowledge creates a challenge for documentation. In a recent project we observed that artefacts produced by both researchers and participants throughout the design process contained knowledge that influenced the design. Our experience suggests there is value in making visible the diversity and source of the research types within a creative process. In this seminar we present a case of designing a learning tool for journalism students. We articulate the interaction between research for and through design by both researchers and participants and suggest there is a need for knowledge forms that capture the situated and dynamic nature of creative research practice.

Presenter:

Skye's research straddles journalism and interaction design and aims to show how one can help the other innovate. She teaches practice-led courses, including Journalism Design, in which students use design methods to envisage the future of journalism. Her PhD project, the NewsCube, won an industry grant for journalism innovation.
