Abbie Trott spoke about her experience of setting Sunshine Super Girl: The Evonne Gool
agong Story by Aboriginal playwright Andrea James in DRAM1010: The Elements of Performance at the Indigenising the Curriculum Showcase as part of Teaching and Learning week on the 3rd of November. Setting a text by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander playwright in the first-year drama course was an action from the recent area review, and Abbie shared her experiences around the complexities of choosing a play in a scenario that some might interpret as an ‘easy’ way to Indigenise the Curriculum. It was helpful for others in the room to hear about Abbie’s consideration for: weaving content into the course authentically; scaffolding across the drama program; continuing to learn and iterate; creating safer spaces for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in the classroom; and supporting cultural capability development in the first year.
