Building an independent documentary career

7 May 2026

To celebrate World Press Freedom Day, two inspiring young storytellers spoke to Journalism students about how they have built independent careers.

Harriet Tahtam and Rose Richani, both journalism graduates, have moved between mainstream media and independent production, telling stories of war, loss and identity.

London-based Harriet Tatham has worked for the ABC, Al Jazeera, and herself. Her award-winning journalism spans film, documentary, digital explainers, and traditional news reporting.

Her documentary Gaza Man tells the story of Palestinian weightlifter Mohammed Hamada and his brother’s escape from war-torn Gaza so that Mohammed can attempt to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. The film won gold at the New York TV and Film Festival.

Rose Richani’s work includes SBS documentaries as well as personal photographic, audio and print projects.

She was a producer on The Swap, which follows six high school students from an Islamic school who ‘swapped’ with six students from Catholic and public schools. Themes of culture and identity carry through to other projects, including an exhibition of photographs from Syria, and Jabalna, her independent magazine.
