At the recent HASS What's Working Assessment Workshop, SCA’s Dr Bonnie Evans and Dr Victoria Bladen were among a group of speakers sharing their experiences of assessment transformation in courses this semester. Bonnie spoke on developing in-class writing tasks in the context of large first-year classes and how in-class writing tasks can be used to partially secure insecure assessment types, such as essays, by requiring students to scaffold larger summative assessments in class. Victoria spoke on transforming assessment structure in literary studies for the Shakespeare and His Contemporaries course to include worksheets for a Management of Learning component and on introducing a creative response assessment, in which students created a zine, creative journal or scene rewrite in response to a play and reflected on their process. The Workshop was organised to share ideas and reflect on progress in the Lead Through Learning initiative.
