Linking research, teaching and engagement – the PEATLI project

Abstract

The PEATLI project is a New Colombo Plan (DFAT) funded project for student short mobility in Indonesia. Each cohort of PEATLI (the 7^th currently ongoing) involves students from a wide range of disciplines to explore the implications and impacts of programs and policies targeting the Sustainable Development Goals. Students conduct a multi-stakeholder consultation exercise with government and non-government organisations and rural communities, and report their findings back to the local government with suggestions how to enhance community engagement to achieve sustainable and equitable development.

While the NCP short mobility program’s objective is to ‘enable Australian undergraduates to develop a greater understanding of the Indo-Pacific region and build people to people links’, the PEATLI project offers students a rich learning experience that is informed by ongoing research in Indonesia and contributes to it. Moreover, as students come from diverse disciplines, they learn a lot from each other. Vice versa, student involvement in research development has fostered partner relations and engagement with a wider network of government and higher education institutions.

In this presentation, we will share the format and some experiences of the PEATLI project and explore how strong links between research, teaching and engagement can bring about positive impacts on both student learning and research
